There are 6 community infromation centers(CICs) in Syangja district viz mayatari, Bayatari, Helu, Karendada, Lampata and Bagalthok.These centers are working for the awareness and promotion of ICT activities.Hope there will be appropriate help and support to eastablish CICs throughout the Syangja District. These centers are powered by NRIDS, Syangja.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEPAL

Abstract:

In this paper, we discuss mainly the IT (ICT) impact on the development of the Nepal. Nepal being a small country with its geographical setting lacks to exploit the full potential of ICT. Here we discuss the issues, challenges and other issues related to ICT in Nepal.

1. Background:

Despite progress in science and technology a majority of the illiterate and the indigent are in South Asia. Although well aware with the fact that IT is the most important tool for the development of a country like Nepal, Nepal stands in deficient position in IT capability. Due to lack of resources and equipments a country like Nepal always lags behind to use IT for the betterment of the people. Government is initiating a movement towards a more liberal market in IT. There are 30 Engineering Colleges providing IT education and 4000 other institutions provide education in IT and the allied field.

2. Status of IT Education in Nepal

Nepal has started higher education in the year 1918 A.D. by establishing Tri-Chandra College. A step forward was moved by establishing Tribhuvan University in the year 1958. HMG/N started thinking of opening universities in all the development regions of the country-aimed at balanced educational development of the country. Accordingly Purwanchal University was opened at Biratnagar of Eastern Development region in the year 1996 and Pokhara University in the Western development region in the year 1997. Higher technical education was initiated with the start of Bachelor level education in Civil Engineering at IOE in the year 1978.

History of IT Education in Nepal is relatively younger. It only dates back to 1994 with the introduction of programmes like Computer and Electronics in 1994 in the T.U. and in 1995 in T.U. Today there are 30 Colleges offering IT Education in the Country. Out of these 27 are in the private sector.

3. The Universities and Colleges:

Pokhara University (PU), Eastern Regional University (ERU), Kathmandu University (KU) and Tribhuvan University (T.U) are the prominent Universities offering various programs in IT education. Some of them even offer postgraduate programmes in IT.

Tribhuvan University has established Centre for Information Technology (CIT) at its Institute of Engineering Campus. This is the most technically advanced computer facility in Nepal. It contacts a VSAT running with a 64K uplink and 128K downlink to Thai COM with more than 400 computers. TU however has been minimally competitive in attracting Nepalese who have obtained advanced IT degrees from abroad. Except CIT of IOE many colleges have small LAN�s with sufficient computers.

Teachers Training at Syangja

NELTA syangja organized a one day teachers training on �English Phonetics� at Syangja Higher Secondary school, Syangja on 21^st October. The Prime aim of the training was to train the teachers of English with humanities background on nature, production and perception of English speech sounds. To make the English teachers aware of the English sound syatem, the training mainly focused on English consonants and vowels, allophonic variations, aspiration, weak forms in connected speech ,gemination and comparing and contrasting English and Nepali Sound System.more >>>

Kalika Community Health Service Institute (KCHSI) is a community based non-profit and non-partisan initiative to provide the local communities with various basic health services and facilities. The institute is located at Darsing Dahathum-1, Helu, Syangja.
It would be of immense help if we can contribute some of our effort either economically or voluntarily. Let's keep hand in hand in this community effort to provide basic health services to the Nepalese.
